Afro x Lindy Hop Colab with Grace, Ramona, and Remy

This workshop is all about learning together and discovering connections through culture, rhythm, and music. Grace will bring her modern afro flavour, and insights into influential historic African roots. Remy and Ramona will share their love and knowledge of both historic and contemporary jazz dance. Together, we will explore how afro-diasporic dance forms influenced the development of Lindy Hop, finding joy in the common ground between them. The first hour will cover the fundamentals of each style, followed by a second hour where we combine the dances. We'll finish with an hour of social dancing to a mix that will make you move!

 

We are thrilled to be adding this to the R & R weekend, and to welcome the wonderful Grace to the teacing lineup!

Our weekly classes are held in South Yarra at a wonderful hall with a beautiful floor and good sound system. Simon and Olga usually teach the classes, they are fabulous dancers, and equally as good teachers!
For the month of July, Ramona is going to teach in their place while they take a well earned winter break. Lucky for you, Ramona is a world renown international instructor who has over 25 years teaching experience and is very keen to get back into weekly teaching for a bit.

AND we are extra fortunate because the amazing Miya Miyazaki is going to be joining Ramona on the 8th and 15th of July.

The fifth Monday of the month is open house night at 1929 Studios, where we welcome you in to dance, chat, snack, watch films, and hang out. All for free, and open to everyone.

This month is a special 5th Monday, as we celebrate the first block at the new Northcote class, and we celebrate a changing of the guard in Prahran.
What does that last one mean? Both Eric and Ramona are off on parental leave in November, and Miya and Josh will be subbing in for this final course block of the year. So much party!

AN AFTERNOON OF SOLID JAZZ DANCING WITH RAMONA STAFFELD.

If you've been enjoying Mix It Up With Miya and Intro to Solo Jazz on Sundays, you'll relish this chance to go hard on the essentials of historic jazz dance with Ramona.

Ramona Staffield has been teaching and dancing lindy hop and jazz since she was a teenager, working (and teaching!) with Frankie Manning and Chazz Young, and learning with many other elders. She asks her students to develop good, solid technique, but also to take time to enjoy their bodies in motion, and the company of other dancers.

This session will work you hard, but give you a moment of happiness in your busy week.

1.00 Be Inspired class (open to everyone)

3.00 Be Challenged (a class for more experienced jazz dancers)

A new lindy hop course starts Monday at Prahran with Eric and Miya.

Learn the most popular swing dances of all: lindy hop! Our courses are taught cumulatively, which means we start right at the beginning, then build on the basics. And at every stage we focus on enjoying ourselves and the company of our friends.

Your teachers are Eric Liew, and Miya Miyazaki. Their goal is to get you up and dancing, discovering the fun of lindy hop.

IF YOU REALLY LOVE LINDY HOP…

…and want to connect with your community during this special month, this one's for you!

This is a one hour workshop which works like a group private, where we explore things you can work on and take home to practise. There will be personalised feedback, some sweet tunes and lots of good ol' lindy hop dancing! This is an open level workshop so newer or experienced dancers are welcome.

Miya and Eric are wonderful teachers. Their clarity, knowledge, and fun will spark your dancing!

This class follows all COVID-19 rules and regulations as outlined by the DHHS website. We encourage masks, but if you have flu like symptoms, or someone close to you does, please stay home. ALL students and teachers must be fully vaccinated (status will be checked upon arrival.)
