KATHRYN KELLY

When swing dance classes hit her home-town of Geelong in 2003, Kathryn took the night off her weekly basketball game to attend. The next day she quit her team, and has been learning, social dancing, creating, teaching, practicing and performing ever since.

Kathryn lovingly created Melbourne’s first weekly solo jazz venue, and in non-COVID times teaches both solo and partnered dancing with Melbourne’s own 1929 Studios, and has been fortunate over the years to teach both partner and solo dancing at a number of local and interstate events. Kathryn has gained a number of awards for her partner and solo dancing at events such as the Lindy Royale and the Australian Jitterbug Championships.

Through these projects and experiences, Kathryn has developed a particular interest in improvisation, self-expression and communication in solo and partnered swing dance. She has coordinated a number of social dancing events in Melbourne such as Community Night, The Weekend Wiggle and various solo ‘jam nights’, and is particularly interested in building welcoming spaces.

Kathryn teaches lindy hop and solo jazz.
